This is an important record from the New Zealand Wars written by someone who was there. It gives a detailed chronicled account of events. Hawthornes desire to give a connected and truthful account of the Poverty Bay Massacre, the failings of Government and the Military and to relate the stories of the unsung heroes of the time.  A brief account of the reasons behind the wars, deception where land was concerned, the native allies, Te Kooti's revolt, the conclusion of the Hau Hau's.
James Hawthorne received quite a bit of condemnation from various sources which were printed in the newspapers at the time, for his blunt and truthful account of the events that he witnessed.
