School CommitteesMany Cambridge parents have rendered long and distinguished service on school committees and of recent years as members of Parent-Teacher Asociations. Space will not permit the listing of all committees but a few members deserve special mention. Mr A. N. Macky was chairman from 1925 to 1932 and was for a period chairman of the Auckland Education Board. Mr V. G. Boulton served from 1925 to 1936. Mr J. Lundon served as chairman from 1907 to 1914, and Mr C. H. Priestley from 1914 to 1923, for the greater part as chairman. Others were Messrs H. E. Amyes 1932 to 1944, W. R. Garrard, 1928 to 1944, E. J. Wilkinson 1905 to 1919, H. Bell from 1913 to 1922, S. N. Ziman from 1928 to 1936, F. Bycroft from 1916 to 1924, P. T. Glanville 1917 to 1924, and J. G. Allan 1955 to 1963. Members of the present committee are Messrs E. J. Webb (chairman), J. R. Ryan, A. Sutherland, A. Morey, W. Bublitz, J. Entwisle, Mesdames A. Dodd and K. Boyce. Old Cambridge Families Well RepresentedSome old Cambridge families were present in force at the reunion. The Tysons were represented by Leslie, Walter^ Ray, Amy (Mrs Amodeo), Gladys (Mrs Pitcaithley) and Dorothy (Mrs Simons). Three members of the Webb family were Ruth (Mrs Wilkinson), Alice (Mrs Silcock) and Marjorie (Mrs Taylor). Marjorie was a pupil from 1904 to 1908, a Pupil Teacher from 1909-11 and a teacher from 1917 to 1920. Of the Macky family there were Lindsay, Kathleen (Mrs Harbutt), Mary (Mrs Porteous) and Margaret (Mrs Mackay). There were four Smales girls, Dorothy, Clare, Joan and Betty, expupils of 1911-12. Mrs Irving (Maria Livingstone) was one of a family of eight who all attended the school. Those present were Lily (Mrs Gillespie), Eileen (Mrs Craig), David, and Maria (Mrs Irving). The others not present were Margaret (Mrs U. Autridge), Daisy (Mrs Simsons), Sadie (Mrs Thomas) and James. Five members were present of the Dagg family, Jim, Alien, Nola, Joan and Ruth. There were three Peakes, Anne, Bertha and Bob and four Bryces, Maurice, Robert, lan and Douglas. Robert had been a former pupil-teacher at the school. Several members of the Buttimore family were also present—Ces and his three children, Faith and Kerin (formerly teachers on the staff), also Fred, Margaret, Shirley (Mrs Mc-Leod), and Essie (Mrs Dodd). Robert Swayne was one of the earliest pupils at the old school first established at the redoubt. His son A. J. (Cocky) Swayne was at the school in 1897, and his son Michael and their two children have been pupils of the school. There were also numerous members of different branches of the Boyce family, notably Mrs Giles and Mrs Tucker, Chris, Bob, Mrs W. Stewart, Mrs C. Margan and Mrs T. Wallace. The whole Giles family form an important branch of the Boyce tree. As well as Mrs Giles, there were present at the reunion all of her family except Mr Jack Giles, who has just come out of Whakatane Hospital following a heart attack. Mrs Goodwin (Nell), who lives with her mother in Hamilton Road is the eldest daughter. Her grandchildren are attending the Cambridge Primary School today — the fourth generation. The others who attended the reunion were Mrs N. Roberts (Maud), of Hautapu; Mrs Murcott (Kath), of Waihi, Mrs Boyd (Daisy), of Waihi, and Mr Ron Giles, of Tokoroa. The Haworths were also well represented, there being Cliff, Les and Mrs B. Bromwich. Mr Leslie Williamson, a member of the Cubis family, attended the school from 1916 to 1924. He is chairman of the Tariff Advisory Board to the States of Malaysia, and would have returned for the celebrations but for unexpected happenings. His daughter, Jennifer, is at present attending the Cambridge High School, but will go back to Kuala Lumpur with her mother and father after they spend leave in New Zealand later in the year. A brother, Mr Vernon Williamson, who also had his primary schooling in Cambridge, is now District Manager of the New Zealand Milk Board in Auckland. Their mother, formerly Martha Cubis, attended the Pukerimu School with her sisters. However, three of the boys, Bill, Ray and the late Wilfred Cubis, were all pupils at Cambridge. Many Cubis descendants have attended the school, one who was prominent in the celebrations being Mr Ross Cubis, conductor of the Cambridge Municipal Band. Stan Wallis was at school from 1910 under Mr R. C. Walker, Mr A. J. Shepherd and Mr Caddie, with Miss Gavey and Mr Shanahan at the High School. His family also attended the school, Jack, Ted, Valeric (Mrs Dahlberg) and several grandchildren. Former Teachers Come Back to SchoolFormer teachers present at the celebrations included several who rose later to be headmasters of other schools. Mr A. J. Shepherd, first assistant from 1902 to 1903 was later headmaster of Warkworth D.H.S., Fairfield, Masterton, Thames, Central and finally Te Awamutu D.H.S. He is now living in retirement at Epsom and at the good old age of 87 years is remarkably well preserved. Mr Shepherd was formerly a noted cricketer and represented New Zealand. Probably one most would remember would be Mr Harry Vause,, first assistant at the school from 1913 to 1930 and later headmaster at Turua, Hillcrest and Eltham. He was noted for his interest in a wide field of sporting activities, including rugby. For many years he was Superintendent of the Cambridge Fire Brigade. He recollects having a. class of 90 pupils in standards 3 and 4. He has pleasant recollections of the school and of the high standard it reached in singing, art and English. Others present were Mrs O’Loughlin, MrsJosling (Miss Joan O’Loughlin), Miss D. Meth-ven, Mrs Robins (Miss Betty Keeley), Miss M. Harris, Mr T. Kerr, Mr P. Salter, Mrs Salter (Doreen Morriss), Miss V. J. de la Mare, now senior lady assistant at the High School, Mr Clem Ludgate (assistant, 1928), Mrs Hammond (Mrs Ruth Wood, nee Speight). Mr Jack Yolland, formerly senior assistant at the secondary department, served for some years on the post primary inspectorate and was in turn headmaster of Huntly and Fairfield Colleges. Mr S. B. Dunn, headmaster from 1947 to 1954 took a great interest in the secondary department and had much to do with its elevation to post-primary status. He retired in 1954 and lives in Auckland. Others were Mr E. Orsulich and Mrs. Orsulich (nee Mary Macky). Among other teachers who registered or were present were: MtJU.P. Bear, 1937-41, and 1946-50.
